Artist’s Statement

Given the range of materials and tools available for mosaic art today, this medium is clearly enjoying a remarkable revival. In the last 10 years I have seen the on-line mosaic community evolve from discussions of flower pot designs to dazzling three dimensional abstract pieces using every imaginable tessera. Because a modern mosaic can package function, form, composition and statement in bold and durable media, the potential for producing highly original and visually stunning artwork is simply enormous. I particularly revel in three dimensional outdoor pieces, where sunlight, vegetation, landscaping and even electric lighting can help a piece identify with its surroundings to deliver maximum visual impact. My goal as an artist is to contribute to the movement that is driving mosaic to a new level of expression and beauty.

Typically, a work of mine will begin with a flash of inspiration, often while I am driving or operating heavy equipment. Other times I am merely struck by simple shadows and reflections. I sketch the idea on a napkin or whatever is available and continue to develop it, as the theme of the piece suggests to me the basic materials, colors textures and dimensions to use.

I will often chisel out large sections of a piece that is not going anywhere exciting or challenging my existing work base. There are very often long periods of quiet reflective staring and head scratching, as if waiting for the piece to actually speak to me.

Eventually, it does.
